Probably the two worst offenders as far as chalk color goes are red and black chalk. If chalk discoloration on your shaft bugs you, then the tan colored chalk will minimize that for you. I feel like the single biggest factor affecting the perceived effectiveness of chalk is the proper shaping and scuffing of your tip's dome. I have read some articles discussing the effects of different colors of dye on the ability of the chalk to adhere to the tip, and I can't say I have read much that appeared to have any merit beyond the non-scientific speculation of the author. I feel like this exposes the chalk to the heat, moisture, and other contaminants present in our bodies and clothing. This goes along with my advice to avoid using "pocket chalkers" to keep the cube on your person while playing. Chalk cubes absorb the sweat and oils and fine dirt particles from your hands and the sides of the table, and I feel like the quality of a cube of chalk deteriorates pretty fast once it is put into use on a table. I think the most important thing with chalk is having fresh chalk that is relatively new.
